Google has unveiled a new completely driverless car that has no steering wheel or pedals and can travel at speeds of up to 25mph.

The internet giant says the new vehicle’s sensors remove blind spots, and because of their automatic nature they could eliminate problems like drunk and distracted driving.

Systems built into the two-seat cars can detect objects more than two football fields away.

In a blog post Google said: “It was inspiring to start with a blank sheet of paper and ask, ‘What should be different about this kind of vehicle?’ We started with the most important thing: safety.

“We’re planning to build about a hundred prototype vehicles, and later this summer, our safety drivers will start testing early versions of these vehicles that have manual controls.”

Google says it hopes to trial the vehicles in California “in the next couple of years”.
