The CIES Football Observatory has ranked Argentina forward Lionel Messi as the most valuable player in world football.
In the ninth edition of the annual football review, CIES put the value of the Barcelona star at £161.5 million twice the value of Portuguese star, Cristiano Ronaldo who came second with £85.2 million, while Liverpool’s Luis Suarez place third with the value of £79.4 million.
Chelsea forward Eden Hazard and Brazilian playmaker, Neymar complete the top five with a value of £61.2 million and £50.6 million respectively. However, Real Madrid world record signing, Gareth Bale occupy seventh spot with his value put at £50.9 million, £30 million lesser than the La Liga side paid Tottenham for his services last summer.
The publication also revealed that Real Madrid fielded the most expensive starting lineup ever during the 2013/14 Champions League campaign with an average transfer expenditure of over £24 million per player. By contrast, their opponent in this year’s UCL final, Atletico Madrid spent an average of £3.2 million on each player.
